Matsui Yasunari became the head priest of Getsu ji Temple in Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and after studying ancient Chinese and Japanese ceramics, he continued to hone his Neriage techniques. He created his own unique world of expression with works such as Shoretsu and Harikou, and was designated a Living National Treasure in 1993.
Neriage is a type of pottery made by layering different slabs of colored clay, shaping them, and firing them. It is prone to breakage during the production stage and requires very advanced techniques. This work, Suiji, is one of his masterpieces, along with Shoretsu, Harikou, and Seihaku. It was created in 1994, the year after he was designated a Living National Treasure.
