A must see for collectors A rare work from the later years of the Living National Treasure Yasunari Matsui Sui ceramic incense burner with original box, original cloth, and bookmark. Sui ji Neri jo Incense Burner Artist: Yasunari Matsui Inscription Accessories: box, cloth, bookmark Notes: Box stains Highlights: Born in Nagano Prefecture. Yasunari Matsui became the head priest of Gessho ji Temple in Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and after studying ancient Chinese and Japanese ceramics, he continued to hone his Neri jo techniques. He created his own unique world of expression with works such as Shoretsu and Harikou, and was designated a Living National Treasure in 1993.

Neri jo is a type of pottery made by layering different slabs of colored clay, shaping them, and firing them. It is prone to breakage during the production stage and requires very advanced techniques. This work, Sui ji, is one of his masterpieces, along with Shoretsu, Harikou, and Seihaku. It was created in 1994, the year after he was designated a Living National Treasure. It is characterized by its vivid colors and transparent shine, like jewels or glass.

Sui ceramic works are specialized in floral motifs, and this incense burner gives the impression of three colored flowers blooming in abundance. The artist was battling illness in his final years, and only a limited number of his works remain. Among his works, incense burners are extremely rare, with only a small number of them in number.
